Benedict was born in the year 480 AD in a little town in Italy called Norcia. He had a twin sister Scholastica. Benedict was born and raised in a wealthy family who lived the high life. From small Benedict was a man of rules. When Benedict and Scholastica used to play games, he always stuck to the rules and didn’t play differently. He also had rules that he set for himself as a child.
Benedict grew up not liking the high-life. He wanted to dedicate his life to God. When Benedict was a teen-ager he left his family in Italy and went to Rome to study. While Benedict was in Rome, there was a lot of violence going on Benedict hated violence. He then moved from Rome to a town called Subiaco where he spent his time in a cave as a hermit for 3 years. He made friends with monk called Romanus who would come every day and drop down food for Benedict via a rope. While Benedict was in the cave he spent his life praying to God.
Many people heard about Benedict. Benedict started teaching and preaching about God. The people wanted Benedict to teach them about God, and prayer. Benedict started teaching the people about God. Soon after, Benedict became their abbot (leader) who lead them and taught them all about God.
He worked with monks and started to build monasteries with the help of monks. The monks eventually didn’t like what Benedict was doing, so they tried to poison him with a drink. The monks gave Benedict a glass with liquid, before having a sip Benedict blessed it and as he blessed it, the glass shattered into pieces. Because the monks didn’t succeed at poisoning Benedict the first time, they tried again but this time, they poisoned a loaf of bread. This time, as Benedict went to bless the bread, a black bird swooped from the sky and took the bread out of Benedict’s hands.
Benedict later on wrote something called ‘The rule of Benedict’. This was about what Benedict believed in, what messages he got from God and this was also about his way of finding God. People all over started using the rule of St. Benedict and people still use it today.
